March 22, 2018, the Girls Scouts of Historic Georgia in Augusta, GA earned thir STEM badge with help from the. A theft victim asked the Girl Scouts to identify the burglar out of three suspects using evidence from the scene of the crime. The girls were given envelops with evidence and worksheets to guide them to solve the crime. The ACS-SR YCC hosted its annual spring social at Aiken 2 Escape in Aiken, SC. It was an opportunity for YCC members and volunteers to meet and discuss YCC’s goals, plans, and agenda for 2018. YCC also announced that the top three most active student members in 2018 will receive a complimentary 1 year ACS membership. YCC celebrated the Oscars by hosting “Chemistry at the Movies” at the Aiken County Public Library. Volunteers guided children ages 7-11 through experiments on the chemistry of special effects, including creating fog from dry ice, fake snow from the super absorbent sodium polyacrylate, and a foaming monster’s mouth from the reaction of baking soda and vinegar. Members of the ACS-SR gathered on the chilly Saturday morning for the first “ACS-SR Adopt-A- Highway Clean-Up” event of 2018, clearing trash along Whiskey Rd. in Aiken, SC. The group of six volunteers collected approximately 28 bags of trash and several large bits of debris too large for
the trash bags over the course of nearly 1.5 hours! This effort was focused mainly along the northern
end of the adopted stretch of road.
The American Chemical Society Savannah River Section (ACS-SR Section) hosted a Brain Teaser Activity in the afternoon of the DOE Science Bowl for the teams that do not qualify for the Double Elimination Round.
